I recently attended an event on entrepreneurship and it felt like drinking an energy shot! Wow! I learnt, understood, realised, cried, sang, danced, laughed, made connections…Pretty intense.
It was organised by a Spanish couple who I admire a lot. Their mission is to help entrepreneurs become more and better every day and they set a great example because they always achieve their goals and they’re becoming really successful.
I listened to many great speakers at the event and a message just kept repeating itself: if you want to succeed professionally, you must grow personally as well. At some point it dawned on me: I had actually become a better person already! Yes, I’ve been improving really fast since I started. My online business had turned me into a better version of myself.
I realised that personal and professional growth are in fact the same thing. They can’t happen one without the other.
Therefore, with this post, I’d like to look back and show you which areas of my life have improved since then so that you know what you can expect to accomplish. Check it out!
1. Getting up early
I used to get up at 9, now I get up at around 7 (and I don’t even need an alarm), which makes my morning longer and lets me complete more tasks by midday. Why did I start waking up earlier? Because I face new challenges every day and looking forward to succeeding motivates me to wake up early and full of energy.
I used to exercise 2 or 3 days a week. Now I do it every day first thing in the morning and I take it seriously because I’ve realised that, if I do it every day, I can concentrate better at work and I am overall more positive and relaxed.
After exercising, I lie down and listen to a guided meditation on this application: calm. You don’t need to be a monk in Tibet to enjoy the multiple benefits of this practice. Everybody can do it.
It really works for me. It helps me focus, relax and keeps me present, thankful and positive. It’s a way of training my mind and we, entrepreneurs, need a strong mind to go through the many emotions and fears that arise when we start a business and also to keep focused on our objectives.
4. Healthy food
Soon after starting this business, I realized I needed to eat as healthy as possible in order to perform as good as possible at work. In the beginning, I used to order a lot of food because I didn’t have time to cook healthily every day.
I recently discovered the batch cooking technique, which consists in cooking large amounts of food in 2 or 3 hours so that you don’t have to cook for the rest of the week. I do it every Monday and my husband and I are very happy about it. The fridge is always full of delicious, healthy and varied homemade food.
Knowing that I’ll feel more energetic at work motivates me to eat healthily.
5. Having a dog
How does that make me a better person and what does it have to do with my business? Well, adopting a dog is a good thing because you decide to love and take care of another living being.
I’d always wanted to have a dog but I started thinking about it seriously after I started teaching online. Working at home can be a bit lonely sometimes so I started thinking that a dog would make me company and would force me to go out more.
I was right. I’m so happy with my dog. I love him so much. He’s always following me at home keeping me company so I never feel alone any more. Also, I can’t make any more excuses in the morning to go out because I have to walk him even if it rains so he helps me exercise every morning and running has become much more fun with him. I can play with him during my breaks which helps me disconnect even more. He makes me smile, laugh, he loves me, he gets crazy when he sees me and he sleeps with me and keeps me warm in cold days.
All this love makes me feel great, therefore, more positive and happy at work. Trust me, adopt a dog. It’s so worth it. But not any dog, choose well, ask for professional advice if you need it.
When you start a business, you have so many things to do. Apart from your main job, the classes and the preparation, you also have to do marketing, invoices, try new tools, new materials, create content…
Time becomes something really precious. That’s why I think productivity is the key to succeeding. Even if you don’t have a business right now, I recommend you to start reading and learning about it because the more productive we are, the more time we have also to rest, stay with family, meet friends, or whatever we might feel like.
7. Positive thinking
Being an entrepreneur is hard. There, I said it. Yes, it’s really hard sometimes, I’m not gonna lie to you. Every entrepreneur faces many fears, stress, pressure, mental block…But everything is temporary and we eventually overcome all that and our small victories give us more and more confidence every day.
Going through all this teaches us a lot about us and life. We learn how to control our mind and emotions. And we succeed in doing it! Do you know why? Because we don’t have an option. Yes, it’s that simple. When you really believe in something, you may be afraid to do certain things to achieve it but you do it anyway because you really want it. You understand that it’s either moving forward or quitting. So, what’s it gonna be?
Let me tell you something. If you don’t believe in yourself, you won’t succeed. If you are always afraid of failure, you won’t succeed. If you surround yourself with negative people, you won’t succeed.
You must train your mind to keep positive and have faith in yourself and your business. This doesn’t mean you won’t ever fail, though. Failing is actually an ally because it allows us to learn from our mistakes and grow.
Find those things that make you be more positive. Some things that work for me are: exercising, going to nature, watching the sunrise or sunset, dancing, singing, meditation, healthy food, reading inspiring books, watching inspiring videos and people, surrounding myself with great people, good friends, love at home, my dog…
Also, these are some of the things I DON’T do in order to keep positive: wasting time with stupid people, watching the news, fighting over silly things, complaining, stressing or worrying about the future, stressing about past mistakes, meeting friends that won’t stop complaining, watching TV…
The more positive you are, the more motivated you will be to get up every morning and start working.
If you want to read more about how I keep positive and motivated, you can read this post.
On the way to becoming a more positive and productive person I discovered something called ‘minimalism’ and, what a discovery! It’s a philosophy that consists in getting rid of all the unnecessary and keeping the essential. Not only material objects such as clothes or kitchen tools, but also relationships, things to do, projects, hobbies, etc.
After a few months learning how to become more minimalist, I started feeling much happier, more relaxed, more connected to myself, more organised and at peace. I had much more free time! There is lots of info online about this and trust me, you won’t regret taking a look. Don’t believe me, just try! You can start taking a look at this website.
I was wasting lots of time with objects, activities and people that weren’t really important for me. Now I take a much less time to decide what to wear or what to take on a trip. My house is more organised and cleaned. I only do the things I really love doing and I only spend time with the people that are most important to me.
8. You will help more people
If you are a teacher, you’re naturally a person that likes to help others achieve their goals. With an online business you will be able to reach and help many more people because you can create courses and sell them online to help many more students around the world. How does that sound?
And this is all why I only recommend you to start your online business if you are willing to change, to get out of your comfort zone, to improve, to become better every day. As I said, it will not be easy but it will be worth it. Will you accept the challenge?
Remember that your personal growth, a positive mindset and believing in yourself are probably the most important factors that will make you succeed.
What are you waiting for? Start becoming a better person today!
If you have already started a business, I’d love to hear your experience. How have you improved? What are you proud of? Don’t be shy and leave a comment here below.
